WHAT IS CHIROPRACTIC
Chiropractic is an approach to health and wellbeing which diagnoses and treats mechanical disorders of the spine and musculoskeletal system.
“A health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health.” (World Federation of Chiropractic)
IS IT SAFE?
Spinal manipulation has proven itself to be remarkably safe when used appropriately. Our experienced chiropractors take the time to thoroughly examine your spine to determine the next step for you, whether it be immediate treatment, referral for a second opinion or for further imaging.
The chiropractors at BWSC are highly trained in additional treatment methods effective in restoring length, strength, and co-ordination of muscular activity, as well as releasing scar tissue adhesions as a result of old or chronic injury – rapidly relieving pain and improving function of the neuromusculoskeletal system.
Moreover, chiropractic adjustments of the spine are internationally recognised as being far safer in dealing with neck and low back pain than many other alternatives. (A Risk Assessment of Cervical Manipulation, JMPT 1995. Manga Report, Ontario Ministry of Health, 1993)
DO I NEED A REFERRAL?
No.
Anyone can visit a chiropractor. It is regarded as an effective and proactive health care modality that seeks to enhance your health and prevent painful or degenerative conditions. Chiropractors are licensed health care professionals who are qualified to examine, diagnose and care for patients directly without referral.
We do in fact, receive many professional referrals from our network of local doctors, physiotherapists, podiatrists, and massage therapists; seeking our opinion on a variety of spine complaints. Many of our patients, of course, are also referred to us by their friends, family or colleagues after experiencing the benefit of our help. These referrals we most gladly welcome.
WHAT ABOUT X-RAYS?
If X-Rays or other imaging such as CT or MRI are deemed necessary by your chiropractor, we can refer you to have some taken after your appointment.
HOW LONG BEFORE I FEEL BETTER?
This varies from person to person, and many factors affect the healing process. How long have you had your problem? Are you keeping your appointments? Are you getting the proper rest, exercise and nutrition? Do you smoke? Most patients sense enough progress within a short period of time to carry out the chiropractor’s recommendations.
HOW LONG WILL I NEED CHIROPRACTIC CARE?
This answer varies depending on your condition, the length of time it has been present and your diagnosis. We strive for excellence in the clinical care of the spine, and our recommendations are based on experience and best practice. It is always your decision as to how long you choose to benefit from chiropractic care. After an initial period of care, many people choose to take an active role in their health and return for check-ups periodically.
AM I TOO OLD OR TOO YOUNG FOR CARE?
No. If you have a spine you can visit a Chiropractor- a trained health professional well equipped to diagnose conditions of the spine and safely offer appropriate treatment and/or advice.
